Government grants come from 26 US federal agencies. These include the Departments of Defense, Agriculture, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce, Education, Energy, Treasury, Labor, Veterans Affairs, Justice, State, Transportation, Health and Human Services, and Interior. Other agencies that offer free government grants are the Corporation for National and Community Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Further, the National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, as well as the National Science Foundation also provide government grants. Each of these federal agencies offers different types of grants for different purposes. The Department of Education, for instance, provides grants that promote equal access to education for the public. The Department of Housing and Urban Development aims to increase the number of homeowners and provide affordable housing. The purpose of the Agency for International Development is to provide humanitarian and financial aid to people in over 100 countries throughout the world, while the Department of Agriculture (which formed in 1862) serves the US and people around the world with means to provide food and end hunger. The largest US federal agency that makes grants for volunteer services is the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, as well as Learn and Serve America programs gives people the chance to volunteer and serve the community. When it comes to the arts, the National Endowment for the Arts is the largest fund source. Through its government grants, this agency supports art education. Among the more publicized agencies is the Small Business Administration, which offers guidance and support to small businesses.
